Senior Pictures in West Alabama: 4 Ways to Make Your Senior Session Feel Like YOU

If you’re a senior and the idea of taking the exact same photos everyone else takes makes you want to avoid senior pictures entirely… hi. This is for you. 😂

Senior sessions are some of my favorite sessions to photograph because there really is no one way they’re supposed to look.

You can dress up and go somewhere polished. You can wear jeans and wander through a field. You can bring your jersey, letter jacket, cap and gown, instrument, car, dog, best friend — whatever actually feels like part of your life right now.

Looking back through Tori, Madiley, Nate, and Erica’s senior galleries made me want to put this post together because all four sessions feel completely different, and that is EXACTLY the point.

Tori: bright, colorful, and a little editorial

Tori’s set is the perfect example of how senior pictures can feel clean and classic without being boring.

We photographed her around a bright greenhouse filled with flowers, white walls, patterned floors, and so much pretty natural light. Her light denim and soft neutral tops kept the whole gallery easy and fresh, while the greenhouse gave us a ton of variety without needing to drive all over creation.

There are seated portraits on the front steps, close-ups surrounded by flowers, photographs through the windows, and those clean full-body frames that feel a little more editorial.

If you’re the senior who loves pretty spaces, flowers, a lighter look, and outfits that feel current without being overly trendy, this type of location is SO good.

Madiley: fields, a creek, and the pieces of senior year that actually meant something

Madiley’s session went in a completely different direction.

When we were planning, she told me she went to Curry and wanted outdoor locations. We talked through a field near Curry, and Madiley also suggested the creek near Walston Bridge because she liked it even better than the original lake idea.

That little bit of collaboration is exactly why her session feels personal.

We photographed her in open fields, along the road, and down by the creek. She brought in school pieces too, including her letter jacket and jersey, which immediately made the photographs feel tied to this exact season of her life instead of just being pretty portraits that could have been taken at any age.

That is one of my favorite things for seniors to bring.

You do not have to wear school stuff for the entire session. Five or ten minutes with your jacket, jersey, uniform, instrument, or whatever has been a huge part of high school is enough to give you photographs that will mean a whole lot more ten years from now.

Nate: make the school and your sports part of the story

Nate’s senior photos are basically my argument for why guys’ senior sessions do NOT have to be awkward.

His gallery includes football in the locker room, soccer on the field, cap-and-gown photos, casual portraits, and photographs around Jasper High School.

There is something so good about photographing a senior at the actual place where so much of their life has happened.

The locker room, the field, the front of the school — these are normal places while you’re living in them every day. Then you graduate, move on, and suddenly those photographs become a time capsule.

For athletes especially, I love mixing the more polished senior portraits with the stuff that actually looks like your life. Sit in the locker room. Grab the football. Get out on the soccer field. Wear the cap and gown for a few photos, then change back into something you would actually wear.

Senior pictures can be both.

Erica: outdoors + downtown for two completely different looks

Erica came into her senior session wanting photographs in Huntsville, with some images in an outdoor/natural area and some downtown.

We talked through Jones Valley and downtown Huntsville during planning, and the combination gave her gallery two completely different personalities without the session feeling disconnected.

Her white dress against the open landscape feels soft and warm. Then once we move into the city, we get brick, church doors, sidewalks, stairs, big columns, and clean architectural lines.

It is such a good reminder that you do not have to choose one “vibe” for your senior session.

If you want the field AND downtown, do both.

If you want your school AND somewhere completely unrelated to school, do both.

If you want casual jeans for one part and a dress for another, absolutely do both.

The variety is what makes the final gallery so much fun to look through.

What should you bring to your senior session?

You do not need to show up with a truckload of props.

Start with the things that actually matter to you.

A few ideas:

- your letter jacket

- sports jersey or uniform

- football, soccer ball, softball glove, bat, etc.

- cap + gown

- college shirt or future-school gear

- instrument

- books

- your car or truck

- flowers

- a favorite pair of boots

- something connected to a hobby

- one outfit your mom loves and one outfit YOU love 😂

The goal is not to cram everything you have ever done into one photo session. It is just to include enough of your personality that your pictures could not belong to anyone else.

When should Class of 2027 seniors book?

Earlier than you think!

Fall books up quickly because everyone suddenly remembers they want senior pictures once the weather starts feeling good. Spring also fills fast with graduation sessions.

If you already know you want photos, getting your date on the calendar early gives us more flexibility with weather, outfits, locations, sports schedules, and the kind of light you want.

And no, you do not need to have every detail figured out before you inquire.
